"Good product ... good value" 2009-02-05
By Hawk-eye (Oak Ridge, NC)
Well made, flexible to use. If you need a small press .. this is definitely the one you want. Well made, functional and dang what a value. Price them out there ... but you'll be back. Palmgren makes a wonderfully made product. No complaints at all.

If the larger presses they offer are as well made as this one ... I might just have to pick one up later. Comparing what I got from Palmgren to the ones available locally ... no comparison. This is much better and comes with the three tips. Reversing the ram to use the tips couldn't be easier. Do I sound please? You bet I am. Great press and I spent at least $30 less than I would have for one that's not even on par with this one!

OK Folks,

if you need an arbor press, and if it's a plus because it was made in the good ole USA...then this is the one for you.

The price is excellent, and the quality is great.

I purchased it for something "other" than it's intended purpose, and was NOT disappointed.

If you need an arbor press, then look no farther.

 "Great Machine" 2009-07-18
By Steven A. Bissell (Tucson AZ USA)
I did a lot of research before buying this drill press. There are a lot of options out there and some of the newest ones have some neat chrome. When you inspect the drive mechanisms, however, it is clear that most are light duty machines. This machine is a workhorse. The work area is large for a bench machine. It has about 1 1/2" more area than the drill press I replaced and it really helps. I was also surprized about how quiet the machine is. I read some reviews that were a couple years old saying their machine arrived with the packaging tore up. Mine arrived in perfect condition. In summary; Great Machine!

"Great drill press, but a tough purchase" 2009-06-27
By Namshub
My update is below, but this information is still pertinent to anyone planning to buy a tool from Grizzly: I purchased the floor model of this tool (G7944). All the reviews seem to indicate it is a great machine once its working, which is why I am giving it a 2 instead of a one. I am rating Grizzly quality at this time, not the tool. I will certainly update this once I get the tool working.

A word of caution: if you are like me, and travel frequently, make sure to assemble to tool as soon as you get it. There is a 30 day return policy, and once its gone, you own the tool for life and need to resolve anything with Grizzly support. Hopefully, most people will not have any issues.

I am in month number 3, and I am still getting replacement parts. The 1st time the pole was busted at the base, literally large parts of iron cracked off. The packaging was pretty thin in this area, so I was not too surprised. I called support and they were very friendly... they sent another pole right away. I received the pole, and then tried to install it, only to discover that the holes do not align with the base. They are WAY off. In some cases, you cannot see the other holes. I even attempted to turn the pole around, on the hope that there was a "special" way to set it down. Obviously this was not the case.

I have placed another call with support, and they will call me next week. I expect I will have yet another large iron base pole in my garage. Hopefully, the 3rd time will be a charm.

UPDATE: The 3rd time was not a charm. I got another incorrect pole and base. Grizzly finally had me return the entire drill press. They investigated the returned device, and then sent a new one. The return process took about 3 weeks to complete.

Now that I am using the tool, it is excellent. I could not be happier. My 4 stars is for the tool b/c once I got the right stuff, it works flawlessly. I would give it 5 stars, but the insane buying process was a little disconcerting. It may be the case that I just had a run of bad luck.

However, my warning above still stands. Make sure someone is present who can inspect the tool and all included parts immediately. I know most people do not travel like I do, so this is probably a minor concern.

"Solid drill press, not a $1500 drill" 2009-05-18
By Greg A. Miller (CA)
I was going to buy a craftsman but the reviews were all pretty bad. i bought this drill based on the reviews and the photo, i wanted a swivel base/table or a drill press is pretty worthless. so far the thing works great and cuts through stuff like butter. couple things:

1. if you don't have a loading dock at your house and need a lift gate, the shipped goes up another $30

2. the box is pretty compact, so you really don't need a lift gate unless you area super wuss.

3. one of the holes for the handles wasn't tapped so great. took me several attempts to get the handle in straight so it wouldn't cross thread

4. all the stuff on this drill is metric (ok, but harder to find screws, bolts in US)

5. comes with a light, no light bulb. looks like there used to be a light bulb guard/window but it's not included. have to make your own from a cd case. then you need a couple metric screws to fasten it.

6. there is runout. i can feel it with my finger; not going to make .01 holes with this thing.

7. it is heavy duty, really.

 "two thumbs up" 2008-02-26
By William Hall
I haven't had a chance to put it through the wringer yet, but, the few times I have used it thusfar show a lot of promise. Went together very easily, although a heavy unit. Speeds are easy to adjust with the belts. Not too noisy. I'm not sure I am thrilled with the table height adjustment mechanism, mainly the track on the side of the post but also the crank mechanism. Works OK so far though. All in all I would give it an 8 out 10 on quality and 10 out 10 for value. I highly recommend this unit if you are looking for a benchtop unit. Watch out on the shipping, I picked it up at the local shipping center, they say they would deliver to my house though, they did call to schedule. Not sure how the delivery to my house would have went, read the delivery terms and ask questions first.

"Best bang for the buck, customer service not bad" 2007-03-10
By Howard S., Hadley (WA United States)
Before I start, woodworking is a fairly new hobby for me. Prior to my shoulder problems, I worked in a machine shop, so I'm used to working with steel and aluminum.

Like others, I have suffered not having enough tool for the job at hand. So when I went shopping, I hit Sears, Harbor Freight, the big box stores, and last, went to the Bellingham,WA. showroom. Just because it's not that far away from us.

The Grizzly was far and away the most drill press I saw for under $300. Setup was easy once I made a sturdy bench for it to be attached to. It runs smoothly, and has more than enough power for anything I can throw at it. It has the advantage of more low end speeds than most drill presses in the price range.

It took me a few days to come up with a good drill press table for it, but it works well with it, although I have had to remove the handles more than once to get in close. Since then Grizzly offers a table that looks decent for $30

I had one part break after 6 days, and had a discussion with customer support. They wanted to charge me until I pointed out it was darn near new. They sent the part, and I had it installed 2 days after the talk with customer service.

Since then, I've had occasion to contact customer service (on another item), and they worked with me, and it took 2 tries for them to find a part that would do what it was supposed to. No problems with that issue.

I've found customer service to be helpful, but I think it depends who answers the phone on the other end. I've had excellent results via email though.

"A Rolls Royce of bench top drills" 2010-03-04
By Mr. M. H. Cox (Ebbw Vale, Gwent United Kingdom)
Ordered, paid and delivered within a week. I unpacked, and assembled within 2 1/2 hours. The drill

is silent and meets its specification. Just a few tips. I used 4 1/2 inch bolts for the base. Before bolting the column to the base, clean, and try inserting into the headstock. You will note a column stop about 2 1/4 inches inside the headstock. When you are satisified that the column will easily move inside the headstock, place a piece of insulating tape about 2 1/4 inch from top of column. Now bolt the column to base. Next, the table support, mine was slightly rough between the clamping space. Used a fine file. table support then easily slides on the column. Now slide table support on column, then the headstock, the tape will indicate when headstock is fitted correctly.

I fitted a 4" vice to the table support, with one side bolted to the table, using 1 1/2 bolts. It works for me. Support lock handle, mine is fitted to the left hand side!!!!!!

I tapped the chuck using a mallet. The drilling return spring is OK. I did not change the drill depth stops.

Finally, beware, the overall height is 22", but the pulley safety cover requires a further 5 inches.

Easily a five star plus for the product, delivery and cost.

I recieved the Powermatic Mortiser earlier than estimated. Having used two other table top mortisers before this one, I found it impressive right out of the box, Massive and impressively put together, easy assembly. Zero vibration, quiet motor, Ergonomic controls and switches, Smooth action. But dont think being a table top means lightweight or something to hide away when not in use. This sucker is a very heavy hundred pounds and demands to be adored! I also got the Powermatic Floor Drill Press the same week - and found it just as impressive - lots of cool features well designed etc, but thats another story for another day!

"Arived Broken, Hidden defect from factory! Cheep built for the price" 2010-01-03
By James Dingman (Wisconsin, USA)
The first thing that I noticed was that the Palmgreen press was very lightweight compared to my other 1 ton arbor presses. Not sure if this is good or bad, depends on the strength of the iron used on these units. We will see how it stands up in the long run.

The first press that I received was cracked in the center of the base both sides of the base. This was a factory defective casting that was "hidden" by paint and passed on to the unsuspecting consumer, me! I did not see the cracks until I mounted the press and big chunks of paint flaked of both sides where the base flexed. Good think I noticed it before I put the press into service or I might have got a facefull of press as it let loose under pressure! Currently waiting for the replacement.

AS to the quality of the unit I was not particularly impressed. I have a couple of other Taiwan and China presses in my shop and overall they are better quality than this Palmgreen and cost almost half as much. My main concern, other than the cracked base, is the lack of gibes for the post. On both of my Oriental units the center drive post rides on brass plates that are loosened and tightened by the set screws in the front plate and the side of the unit. On the Palmgreen the column rides directly on the ends of the set screws which is not a good thing as all the pressure is concentrated on the face of the 1/4 inch screws and will result in rapid wear and grooving on the face of the post! Another quality issue I have with this unit is that the side of the post was never finished after the teeth were cut and there were rough burrs all up and down the post which dragged on the casting. I expect this kind of thing from cheep Taiwan machine work but not a highly touted American Made unit.

Overall, not impressed!

 "An excellent product" 2009-03-16
By J. Galloway (TX USA)
This arbor press has excellent features and is a quality, built-in-the-USA unit. I especially like the hole in the ram so that tool tips of different shapes can be attached. It uses a magnet to hold them in place. I made my own attachement to use this as a leather stamping press and it works great. I found that if you make your own tool tip that you need to carefully copy the ones provided so that the length of the mounting hole portion does not extend further and come in contact with the magnet. I would recommend this product to anyone.

 "DON'T BUY IT!" 2010-03-18
By Gary L. Hopkins (Ft. Wayne, IN USA)
I should not have ignored all the poor reviews I found on several sites about the variable speed control on this drill press. I figured they had tried to adjust it when it wasn't running. I took delivery on this drill press yesterday. The very first time I turned it on and, SLOWLY AND GENTLY, tried to adjust the spindle speed. IT BROKE! When I opened it up, the belt had jumped the pulleys; it appeared as though the adjustable speed mechanism tore itself apart. I'll check into getting it fixed, but not sure I even want to keep it. That may depend on what the service people tell me about this piece of junk. At this point, though, it's a very heavy paper weight and definitely not worth wasting your time or money. This experience has SERIOUSLY damaged my opinion of the Delta brand.

 "Not very impressive" 2009-07-31
By Lena Tordsdotter (Grafton, MA, USA)
I have had this drill press for almost 4 years for mostly light duty shop work. As my woodworking time is limited, it has not been used extensively. Despite this it has failed twice; first the on off switch broke down. It was fixable, but a bit annoying. Now the pin holding the spindle pulley broke, rendering the machine useless. It was not possible to get a part of the pin out, and I have temporarily fixed it with a piece of a coat hanger. It was disappointing to note that the accompanying parts diagram was rendering an incorrect picture of the machine, and it makes me question how much quality control this machine has been subject to.

When the coat hanger breaks I will invest in a Powermatic variable speed drill press, which might have been the right thing to do from the get go.

"A good press but needs rework" 2009-07-03
By Chosen One (Hilton, NY United States)
Good:

Variable speed - middle ranges are not marked but easy to figure out

Solid table

Solid three handle drill extension

Table crank works well

Fairly quiet

Bad:

Cheap chuck - upgrade to a Jacobs

Top motor pulley became seperated from collet - easy fix, drill hole through both when lined up, tap and then Loctite a screw to hold. Newer units have pins to prevent this, mine is 3 years old. Fix took 20 minutes.

Cover has too many screws - easy fix, remove screws and install a couple small hinges. Replace one screw on opposite with thumbscrew. Fix took 20 minutes.

Additional comment:

You do not need to lubricate this press or run through the speed range daily. Once a week would be fine. I service mine once a month.

 "Delta DP350 Drill Press" 2009-04-30
By raziel
I purchased the Delta DP350 drill press from a service centre at a good price after reading the reviews at amazon. The drill press is refurbished and has a 2008 manufacture date. The pulley slippage design flaw mentioned by many reviewers was addressed and fixed by Delta in 2006. However, the decal still has only the 500 and 3100 speed ranges. I made a decal in AutoCad 2000 that I stuck over the existing decal and shows a range of speeds (See images). It would also help if Delta had addressed the issue of removing the six screws from top cover plate to lubricate the pulleys weekly. A hinge system would have helped. Other than that the drill press works great.

 "Short life span" 2008-09-10
By Paula (California, USA)
After drilling about 300 holes in wood, the drill press started making a grinding noise and vibrating excessively. When I took it to the repair shop the technician told me it was probably the bearings. He commented that Delta uses cheap bearings made in China and they fail at a high rate. That was about a month ago. The repair shop had to send the press back to Delta and I haven't heard a word from anyone since.

While the press was working I was happy with it, except I would like a little more power for using hole saws on hardwood.
